We made it through the week unscathed. This week we are finishing up place value, estimation, and rounding. The AC Math class will be taking their test on the Tuesday after Labor Day and Mrs. Gerber's math class will be taking it on Wednesday. Math will be looking at estimation and using the addition and subtraction algorithm (and using word problems to practice.) In Social Studies we are looking at causes for the American Revolution. The Social Studies Weekly that we use in class has an online component that is amazing! I would like to encourage the students to www.clever.com and sign in to read through some of the articles and watch videos. There is a lot of great information in there!

While I do some reteaching on latitude & longitude (some didn't study for their quiz today!), others will have the opportunity to find states and capitals by their latitude and longitude as well as play some online games to practice.
Friday was our first visit to the science lab. (Thanks to all of you that help support Foundation which pays for the lab!) We learned the rules of the lab - what is right and wrong and then got to do a STEM activity. Students had to create a tower using only 5 sheets of paper and masking tape to hold up a t-ball for 20 seconds. The second part of the challenge was to build the tallest tower. Mrs. Gerber's class built a 19 inch tower and Mrs. Tansill's class just barely surpassed them with a 20 inch tower.
We are knee deep into 4th grade at this point. Mrs. Weston (guidance counselor) is coming for her second lesson on Monday and we went to see Mrs. Nelson in the Learning Commons to check out and have our first lesson. For math we are studying place value and powers of 10 with rounding on the horizon. We have also been using our problem solving journals to solve word problems and explain how we solved them. In Social Studies we have been studying maps and locating places using latitude and longitude. We have our first assessment on Monday (8/20). Students should bring home their journals to study. Below is a great video that we watched in class. I hope that everyone had a great first few days back. It has been hard getting back in the swing of getting to bed early (while the sun is still up) and waking up in the dark, but we all survived the first week and even have had perfect attendance all year! For those of you that already know, I'm not necessarily the best at keeping up with the blog, unless it involves pictures from the science lab. So, here are some pictures from the first day! Most of the kids already know each other, but we do have 2 students that are new to Addison and the class has embraced them immediately. I have also been getting to know them personally and starting on Monday I will really get to know them academically. As a class we have created classroom rules, worked on our class mission statement, taken a few different pre-tests, and done lots of 'get to know you' activities. With all of the rain that we have had we were unable to make it outside for recess. Instead we opened up the doors and Mrs. Shore, Gerber, and Tansill all came together to visit, play games, and use the computers or I pads.
Be sure to go and check out the calendar tab on the website. This Thursday we will be having Open House. This is different from Meet & Greet and Mrs. Gerber and I will present together everything you need to know to help make this a successful year for your fourth grader as well as to answer any questions you may have. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email us! Here's to the best fourth grade year ever! |
