In Social Studies the first thing that we are studying are maps. This is a quick review that includes things such as the parts of a map, locating places with latitude and longitude, and identifying some of the important places in the US (cities, rivers, bodies of water, and man-made features.) The majority of our classwork is put into our journals, so please ask your child to show it to you and discuss what we have been doing.
In math we have started our Number Talks (using mental math to solve problems) by trying to add using "friendly" numbers and making tens. I will also focus a lot on problem solving, showing our work in a journal designated specifically for that. Next week we will be jumping into place value with a focus on different ways to write numbers (standard form, expanded form, and word form.)
Most people have returned their beginning of the year forms. Thank you for that. If you haven't (and I let the kids know if I still needed something) please get that turned in as soon as you can. We have had perfect attendance for the first week, and I hope that it continues. If you need to check your child out of school early, please wait until after 11:15, as this will count as a full day. If they leave prior to 11:!5, they are counted as absent.
Letters went home today about open house. Please check your child's agenda for the note, but here is a link to the invitation. /uploads/5/5/9/2/55929043/open_house_invite.docx
Thank you so much for having such amazing and intelligent students. I'm truly blessed to have an awesome class and I have nothing but excitement for the year.
